Research Overview
PT-141 (Bremelanotide) is a synthetic peptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) that acts on melanocortin receptors, particularly MC3R and MC4R in the central nervous system.
Research has investigated PT-141’s mechanism through melanocortin receptor pathways and its effects on sexual arousal response in animal models. A pharmaceutical version (Vyleesi) received FDA approval in 2019 for hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women — the research compound studied here is the unformulated peptide used in laboratory research settings.
